Crooked Smile

"We ain't picture perfect but we worth the picture still"

I love this song for so many reasons. From a literal perspective, I had a horrible gap and bucked teeth as a child that made for many years of teasing. With three years of braces in my past, I still consider myself an "ugly duckling." I'm sure people would treat me much differently--both personally and professionally--had my teeth never been 'fixed.' I also know just how it feels to be judged solely on looks--let's just say I had very few friends throughout elementary school.

In general, I love the message that Crooked Smile sends to not just women, but anyone who is willing to listen. While I may have tracks about big booty b****es in rotation on my playlist, it is exhilarating to hear a rapper promote the importance of a healthy body image. Our society, as a whole, puts physical appearance above personality entirely too often. We are a nation of criticizers, constantly pointing out the flaws of our peers and ourselves.

I love how J. communicates that imperfections are beautiful. Crooked Smile is a refreshing reminder that we shouldn't have to change for other people to like us or for us to love ourselves. It's nice to know that there are still artists out there who are willing to go against the grain to speak about the things they believe in.
